A DOCTOR has been charged with causing the death by careless driving of a pedestrian in a road accident on the A69 near Carlisle.

Dr Samin Ahmed Khan, 74, is alleged to have committed the offence at Warwick-on-Eden on April 27 last year.

The alleged victim of the offence was pensioner Robert Wilson, who prosecutors say died in hospital two days after the accident which the defendant was allegedly involved in.

Khan is charged with causing Mr Wilson's death by careless driving.

Appearing before Carlisle's Rickergate Magistrates' Court via a video link, Khan, of Scaleby Hill, Carlisle, said that he would not at this stage be entering a plea.

District Judge Gerald Chalk declined jurisdiction, ruling that the case should be sent to Carlisle Crown Court for a hearing on August 4. The defendant, who spoke only to confirm his details and to say that he would not be entering a plead, was granted unconditional bail.

Khan was represented by defence lawyer Tom Gent.
