Slough's Queensmere Observatory Shopping Centre reopened its doors on Monday - and 22,000 people poured in during the first day.

Almost all businesses have now reopened across the two sites with customers keen to start shopping again - but social distancing measures serve as a constant reminder that times have changed.

Both the centre and shops have entrance and exit strategies with clear markings and signage.

Hairdressers and beauticians remain closed but are anticipated to reopen on July 4 pending government guidance.

There were initial queues into Sports Direct, Primark and TK Maxx but these have got smaller as the week has progressed.

The 22,000 or so people who visited the centre on Monday represented a similar number to the comparable day this time last year.

Alex Long – asset manager responsible for Queensmere / Observatory shopping centres said: “We were delighted to welcome back both our retailers and shoppers to the centre on Monday in a safe and social distanced environment.”

Slough High Street itself looked a little different.

There were barriers outside some shops and banks as well as directional arrows on the floor. Some parking bays are commandeered to make pavements wider to allow people space to social distance while walking.

Some changes were made as the council's highway team responded to the public's shopping choices. There are particular measures in place outside banks, JD Sports and WH Smith.

Josie Wragg, chief executive, said: “The opening of non-essential shops will bring people back into the town centre and we would encourage people to shop locally and support out local small businesses and retailers.

“Tracker analysis for Centre of Cities has found Slough is in the top ten in Britain for people returning back to the high street.

“Shoppers will be instrumental in the success of rebooting the economy and controlling the virus by maintaining social distance at all times will be key."
