A LOCAL firm that disinfected and cleaned Cardigan’s high street free of charge has once again been publicly thanked by the town council.

But some councillors felt that it was still only right and proper that Ultraclean, the Cardigan firm that carried out the work, should be paid.

Ultraclean boss Marc Thomas insists he was happy to do the work for free as a way of saying thank you to the local community for their support of his business over the years.

Cllr Catrin Miles told June’s meeting of the town council: “I feel very strongly that we said we would cover Marc’s cost and we should honour that.

“I have seen comments saying shame on the council for not doing so and I think we should cover his costs.”

Cllr Yve O’Neill said the council should come up with a figure to pay Ultraclean.

“He has done a massive, well done job,” she said.

It was also suggested that if Mr Thomas did not want payment himself, then a donation could be made to a charity of his choice.

Several areas in the town were highlighted at the meeting that had been in need of particular attention because of the problem with pigeon droppings on the pavement.

Mayor of Cardigan Cllr Clive Davies said he had contacted environmental health officers at Ceredigion County Council and while they were sympathetic to the problem, not a lot could be done.

He said letters had been sent to various absentee landlords of high street properties asking them to take action where possible.

The landlord of the Post Office had already acted, clearing gutters and installing spikes to deter pigeons from landing on ledges.

“It is not perfect but it is better than what it was,” said Cllr Davies.

Other particular areas of concern were outside Shoezone, Coral, John Francis, WH Smith, Tenovus and Crafters Cwtch.

Street cleaning comes under the remit of Ceredigion County Council.
