CARDIGAN Fire Station currently has vacancies for two on-call firefighters.

On-call firefighters are an essential part of the emergency services network and come from all walks of life.

They have often chosen a career outside of the fire service, but also wish to serve their community as a firefighter, ready to respond to emergencies, prevent fire and rescue incidents from happening and protect people and property across Mid and West Wales.

About 74 per cent of Mid and West Wales fire service's operational staff is made up of on-call firefighters, and as well as vacancies at Cardigan, there are job opportunities at stations such as Newcastle Emlyn, Llandysul and Crymych.

Firefighters are paid about £2,000 a year when fully trained and receive an hourly rate and disturbance fee if they are called out.

Firefighters also assist the ambulance service in attending medical call-outs in co-responder vehicles, including people who have suffered cardiac arrests and strokes.

It is impossible to predict how often you would be called out, but the average is approximately two to three times a week for a couple of hours and you need to live within 10 minutes of an on-call station.

If you are not available to provide cover all the time, that is not a problem, you can be paid for being on call for only part of the day or week.
