A CARDIGAN bookshop that was at the centre of worldwide media interest when it was won in a raffle has undergone a radical overhaul.

Bookends bookshop at The Arcade is no more and it is now called ‘Friendly Mulligans’ - a term from a card game - and is a games shop dedicated to board games, role play games, wargaming, card games etc.

It will also be stocking sci-fi and fantasy novels, comic books and graphic novels.

The shop was taken over last November by Dutchman Ceisjan van Heerden – known as CJ - with Icelandic friend Sveinejorn Einarsson when he won it after his name was pulled out of the hat in a raffle.

Previous owners Paul and Leila Morris had decided to retire and rather than close down the business, decided to raffle it off.

And CJ was the lucky man to win it, entering the prize draw after buying £20 of books to qualify.

But now, 12 months down the line, a new business has emerged from the bookshop.

Sveinejorn has returned to live in Iceland and CJ has teamed up with Ben Norman to launch the new gaming venture.

“The book shop never really picked up but we will still have some in stock which will dovetail nicely with the board games,” said CJ.

“People will be able to come in and play all sorts of games, from traditional family board games and wargaming to fantasy role play.

“We aim to be open seven days a week and create a really friendly, social environment where people can come to enjoy themselves over a coffee.

“We hope to appeal to all ages and there will be a good mix.”

“There used to be a similar shop in Cardigan a few years ago called Helm’s Deep but there has been nothing similar since,” added Ben.

“It would be nice to get those groups to come back.”
