A FRIENDSHIP group which meets at a village pub has handed more than £2,000 to the Alzheimer’s Society Cymru.
A coffee morning and cake sale at the Daffodil Inn, Penrhiwllan, raised a whopping £1,153.40 and a further £1,000 was added to the pot thanks to match-funding from Barclays Bank business manager Kayleigh Parry.
Hugh and Gill Matthews, owners of The Daffodil Inn, at Penrhiwllan, launched the club around 18 months ago for villagers to get together over a free cuppa and biscuits and to have a chat.
The friendship group, which is open to anyone, meets every Thursday at 11am and has gone from strength-to-strength.
“It’s a fantastic effort by everyone to raise so much money and we cannot thank people enough,” said pub owner Gill Matthews.
“As well as the cake sale and coffee morning, our pub regulars have also chipped in to help boost the total and it has been a great community effort.
“It’s lovely to see people chatting away in a friendly environment every week. A friendly face, a smile or simply a squeeze of the hand can make such a difference to a person’s life.”
The group has also raised money for the Welsh Air Ambulance thanks to weekly voluntary donations from those attending the meetings
