TOWNS and villages throughout the Tivyside region fell silent on Remembrance Sunday to commemorate those who lost their lives in conflict.

Hundreds of people of all ages attended the service at Cardigan’s war memorial, which was conducted by the Rev John Bennett.

Under bright blue skies, wreaths were laid by both groups and individuals, led by the deputy lord lieutenant Miss Bronwen Morgan and Mayor of Cardigan Cllr Shan Williams, who laid a wreath with red, white and purple poppies.

The white poppies represented peace and the purple poppies represented animals that died in war.

Cllr Williams said: “The biggest respect we can pay to the fallen is to ensure that it never happens again.”

The white poppies represented peace and the purple poppies represented animals that died in war.

As the wreaths were laid, the roll call of the fallen was read out – 93 from the First World War, 49 from the Second World War, one from the Falklands and two from Afghanistan.

The two-minute silence was impeccably observed and the Last Post and the Reveille was played by Cpl Iwan Griffiths.

The Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph was read by Jed Lewis, while poems were read by pupils from Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi.

The Rev John Powell officiated at Holy Trinity Church, Newcastle Emlyn, for the annual service of remembrance at the war memorial.

The parade marshal was Les Lovatt and the community was fully represented on the march through the town and at church.

Lessons were read by the Mayor, Cllr Alan Jones and Scout leader Helen Corbett, while Mrs Gaynor Bowen played the organ and Mrs Kari Byrne read the names of the fallen.

At the ceremony at the war memorial the Exhortation and Last Post were followed by the two-minute silence and Reveille very well played by Rowan Thomas. Wreaths were laid by representatives of community groups.

The Kohima Epitaph was recited by Ieuan James (Poppy Appeal organiser) in Welsh and Kenneth Jones (Legion Branch chairman ) in English. The collection in church for the Poppy Appeal raised £555.

Grateful thanks to PCSO Jeff Kedward for police support, to the church officers for arrangements in church and to the Scouts for providing refreshments at the Community Hall after the ceremony.
