NEARLY £1million of European funding will remain available to restore Cardigan’s Markethall if a cash injection from the county council is approved tomorrow (Tuesday, July 30).
Over the last two years Cardigan Building Preservation Trust has used Heritage Lottery Fund grants to develop a full restoration and enhancement of the building.
It hit a stumbling block recently when a capital grant application of £500,000 was turned down which puts a further £990,000 of European funding at risk - and in turn the whole project.
The Grade II* listed building in the town centre is owned by Ceredigion County Council and run by Menter Aberetifi with the overall cost of the transformation project estimated to be around £1.49million.
Plans include re-roofing the building and replacing the roof lantern glazing system, demolishing the adjacent public toilets to build an access tower with lift and stairs, new disabled access, renew market stalls, rewiring, underfloor heating and including renewable energy components.
Ceredigion County Council’s cabinet is tomorrow recommended to approve the allocation of £460,000 capital funding to Cardigan Building Preservation Trust over two years in order to secure European funding.
A long-term lease at a peppercorn rent would be agreed and the Trust would also take over the public toilets at Greenfield Square.
