CAR enthusiasts from across The Channel arrived in Salisbury at the weekend as "a gesture of support" following last year's poisonings.

As part of its annual classic car rally, Club Maserati France decided to stay in the city before heading onto the international event – which its members organise.

Parking up near the cathedral, the group were greeted by Mayor John Walsh and Mayoress Carrie Walsh.

Organiser Marie-Elisabeth Deroche-Miles said: "We had initially planned to stay in Hampshire during our big annual classic car rally which is taking place in the UK this year.

"I have, however, visited Salisbury many times and always found the city extremely nice and welcoming.

"Consequently, my husband and I, as the organisers of this international event, decided to spend half a day in Salisbury.

"We are hoping that this will show the many people and tourists who have deserted this wonderful city after the major incident of March 2018 that Salisbury is as lively and beautiful as ever."

Addressing the mayor, Jean-François Blachette, vice-president of the club, added: "We are extremely grateful for your warm welcome today and very happy to be visiting the most splendid City of Salisbury.

"We are well aware of what Salisbury has been through over the past year and wish, by our presence, to show a friendly support to this wonderful city and its inhabitants.

"We, unfortunately, also know what it is to be the victims of terrible acts; but we believe that it is by supporting each other in peaceful and joyful moments like this event today that, however deep the grief and sorrow are, life goes on and happier times come back."

Cllr Walsh said how much he appreciated the club "going out of their way to show solidarity with the citizens of Salisbury".

"Their gesture was much appreciated," he added.
