CALLS are growing for safety improvements to a busy stretch of road outside Cardigan.

Cllr Catrin Miles has again raised the issue of the A478 towards Crymych just off the Ridgeway roundabout at a meeting of the town council.

She had previously referred to an incident where a car came off the road, crashed through the plastic bollards and dropped down into the field below.

“The driver who had that accident has been in touch with me and is going to send me pictures as he feels very fortunate to be alive,” said Cllr Miles.

“Trucks and lorries have gone over the edge before. Does someone have to die before something is done?

“It is a road used by many large vehicles and if there are branches overhanging they will cross the white line and there is just nothing there to prevent a driver going over the edge apart from a bit of plastic.

“It’s a big drop and plastic bollards aren’t the answer. Solid barriers are needed all along there. It would be a terrible thing if someone was badly hurt or killed.”

She is to continue pressing for improvements along the stretch of road, while Cllr John Adam-Lewis said he had also been in touch with Ceredigion Council highways officials to highlight the dangers.

“They are going to look at it to see if they can put something there,” he added.
