THE memory of Corey Sharpling will live on in Newcastle Emlyn after £3,000 was handed over by his family to local organisations.

Twenty-one-year-old Corey died in a landslide on the A484 at Cwmduad during Storm Callum last October and his family were overwhelmed by the support they received from the community.

And now they want others to benefit and have presented cheques for £1,000 each to three groups based in the town – Apple Dance Studio, the Newcastle Emlyn Gateway group of Mencap Ceredigion and Newcastle Emlyn detachment of the Dyfed and Glamorgan Army Cadet Force.

Handing over the cheque to the cadets, where Corey was a member aged 13-18, mum Elaine said: “This donation is in celebration of Corey’s life.

“I have no doubt that the time Corey spent in the cadets helped shaped Corey’s life. He was loyal and full of fun and being part of the force brought him pride and a sense of teamwork.

“The army cadet force is a wonderful organisation for young people and we will continue to support it in years to come.”

Major Daniel Priddy, officer commanding, said: “It is a privilege to see cadets come in and mature.

“I know how much the cadet force meant to Corey and a commemorative plaque will be going on the wall remembering the wonderful young man that Corey was.”

The force will also present an annual award to a cadet for teamwork in memory of Corey.

At the cheque presentation to Mencap, held at The Three Compasses, Elaine said: “Mencap Ceredigion is very close to our hearts and without that support coming back the other way since Corey’s death we would have found it very difficult indeed.”

Mencap Ceredegion will also be presenting an annual award in Corey’s name to people in the community who support the group.

Chairperson Jan Kench said: “Corey was a special friend to a lot of people in this group and will always be remembered. There is not many an evening when his name does not come up.”
