TWO youngsters from the Cardigan area will take centre stage in a special programme to be aired tomorrow night (Friday, March 22) on S4C to honour and celebrate some of Wales’ bravest children and young people.

Two of the stars of the show will be 11-year-old Mia Lloyd from Tremain and eight-year-old Trystan Beard from Cilgerran.

During the programme, viewers will have a unique insight into the lives of Mia, Trystan and other special individuals who have been through the hardest of times but have shown so much courage throughout their darkest days.

But also it’s an opportunity for their dreams to come true as Elin Fflur and Rhodri Owen give them a surprise of a lifetime, either in dance classes, at school or even at a "Sweet Sixteen" party.

Mia, a pupil at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi, enjoyed running but in 2017, when out training with Carmarthen Harriers she felt a strange pain in her legs. Following a visit to the doctor she received the difficult news that she had osteosarcoma, a rare type of cancer.

She faced months of intense chemotherapy and in the end because of where the tumour was located Mia took the brave decision to lose her leg.

Now despite her disability and months of distress and upset, Mia looks positively at the future.

“I always try to look at life in a positive way and although things have been difficult I am hopeful for the future,” said Mia.

“I want to try to help others too who have been in similar situations and so I am delighted now to be an ambassador for the Noah's Ark Hospital Charity.”

Mia loves rugby and one of her heroes is the Scarlets and Wales scrum half Gareth Davies. Therefore it was a bit of a shock to see Gareth come to collect her and take her for a game of golf - you can see what happened by watching the programme.

Trystan is eight and suffers from cerebral palsy but according to Anwen, his mother, he is facing his situation with courage.

“Trystan has been through a very difficult time but he always has a smile on his face. He was determined to walk me down the aisle on my wedding day without any support and so he practiced every day without fail even though he was very tired,” said Anwen.

“Of course he succeeded and the sight of his face was one that I would treasure forever.”

Trystan is a huge football fan and in the programme you can see what happened when Trystan met professional footballer Callum Patterson from Cardiff City FC.

Presenter Elin Fflur said meeting these amazing young people was an extraordinary experience.

“What was common for all of them was that they have all faced extremely difficult situations and it would have been very easy to become completely disheartened,” she said.

“But these young people are very special characters indeed, facing their conditions not only with courage but with a smile and a laugh – these are true heroes.”

To cap it all, a special evening was held at the Stradey Park Hotel when all the families came together and received a special trophy, designed and created by Ann Catrin.
