ANY further discussion on the closure of two primary schools in the Cardigan area will be at May’s full Ceredigion council meeting.

Cabinet noted responses from the statutory consultation on the potential closure of Beulah and Trewen primary schools at its meeting on Tuesday (March 19).

Councillors were told by cabinet member for learning services and lifelong learning Cllr Catrin Miles that there had been nine objections received about closing Beulah school, where there are currently 15 pupils, five in their final year.

She said there were eight pupils at Trewen school, none of them in the final year, and there had been 65 objections received in response to the consultation.

Local communities had objected to the proposals to shut the schools due to reducing numbers and increasing costs.

Cllr Marc Davies, Ciliau Aeron ward representative, has been vocal in his objection to the closure of a further primary school at Cilcennin before a new area school is built.

He wanted to speak at Tuesday’s meeting but was told that he “will be given an opportunity to make your case for the school at full council because no decision is being made today.”
