On-call firefighters are an essential part of the emergency services network and come from all walks of life.

About 74 per cent of Mid and West Wales fire service's operational staff is made up of on-call firefighters, such as at stations in Cardigan, Newcastle Emlyn and Llandysul.

Firefighters are paid about £2,000 a year when fully trained and receive an hourly rate and disturbance fee if they are called out.

Firefighters have also been assisting the ambulance service in attending medical call-outs in co-responder vehicles, including people who have suffered cardiac arrests and strokes.

It is impossible to predict how often an on-call firefighter would be called out, but the average is approximately two to three times a week for a couple of hours and the firefighter needs to live within 10 minutes of an on-call station.
