A NEWCASTLE Emlyn woman is set to tackle her first-ever marathon when she takes part in the London marathon at the end of next month – and she has even roped in a pony to help with her fund-raising efforts.

Emma Kilsby will be raising cash for the NSPCC when she tackles the daunting 26.2-mile course with more than 40,000 other runners around the famous sights of the UK capital on Sunday, April 28.

“I got into running four or five years ago and have done a few races, including half marathons and gradually built up,” said 42-year-old mum-of-two Emma.

“I have failed a couple of times to get into the London marathon through the ballot so this time I decided I would run for charity. The NSPCC is close to my heart as I used to be a social worker.”

Emma, a familiar face to many behind the desk at family-run Heating and Boilers Ltd in Water Street, Newcastle Emlyn, is looking to raise £2,200 and is already more than half way and hopes to smash her target.

“We held a fabulous St David’s Day-themed fund-raiser at the Bunch of Grapes in Emlyn. We had themed food, activities, games and a star turn from Sophie Spiteri’s pony Dennis. We then had a party in the night which went really well,” she said.

“The staff at the pub were brilliant and those that took the time to come and support helped to raise around £500.”

Further events are planned, including a spinathon outside the town’s Premier Store on April 12.

“The training is going well and I am looking to complete it in about five hours – Mo Farah better look out!” added Emma.
