CARDIGAN Classic Car show is gearing up for this year’s event and has put out a call to younger enthusiasts to go along and display their vehicles too.

This year’s show takes place on Sunday, May 26 at Cardigan Secondary School Field from 10am-4pm with the usual collection of veteran, vintage, historic, classic, modern classic and retro vehicles.

And club chairman Neal Jones is hoping more younger drivers can be encouraged to take part.

“We were only thinking the other day how things have changed. My first classic car was only 17 years old when l got it and my mum called it an old banger,” said Neal.

“The thing was she had just sold me her three-year-old Citroen hatch back for not a lot - nice car but so boring, there were no rust holes to fill and nothing went wrong with it and nobody admired it.

“So l sold it and bought a clapped out MGBGT. Well it was a sort of sensible car as it had a hatchback. Within weeks l’d renewed the suspension and started sorting out the rusty panels.

“During the summer we went to many MG events and made a lot of new friends. The car was always admired and was a great talking point wherever we went, especially when l was trying to sell the services from my new business venture.

“The other brilliant thing was that it cost me nothing because when l sold it five years later it sold for three times more than l had paid for it.

“That’s what really got me hooked on classic cars as l could frequently change cars and after a bit of work, have some fun and make a bit of money too.

“I’m sure there are still lots of youngsters out there doing the same thing, so download an entry form from the website www.cardiganclassiccarclub.com and bring it along for the day. It doesn’t have to be special so long as it’s a few years old and well cared for.

“There is plenty of room on the field for tractors, bikes and any other interesting modes of transport. Last year we even had an electric milk float turn up and, a few years ago, a newly-restored VW camper turned up, so there is plenty of interest for everyone.

“By the way when l sold the MG my mum said ‘shame you sold that car. I really liked that one dear’.”
