Mrs M A James

Haverfordwest

Western Telegraph:

MAVIS Ann James of Highgrove Residential Home Haverfordwest, formerly of Dreenhill Haverfordwest, passed away peacefully at Withybush hospital on November 4 2018 with her family by her side, she was 91.

The cremation service was held on November 16 at Parc Gwyn Crematorium.

Mavis was born in Saundersfoot in 1927 to the late PC Stanley “Speedy” Henton and his wife Edith Caroline (nee Merchant-Phillips).

She was pre-deceased by her brothers and sisters Melbourne, Enid, Alec, Jim and Margaret, and her devoted husband Dennis in 2015.

Mavis is survived by her daughter Julie and son-in-law Dave, granddaughters Claire and Danielle, and great-grandson Ollie and many nephews and nieces.

PC Henton and his family lived in various places in Pembrokeshire due to his work, but latterly lived in Barn Street Haverfordwest where they all attended St Martins church and Mavis and her younger brothers and sister attended Sunday School there.

Mavis was a member of the Rosemary Lane youth club and was a table tennis champion. On leaving school Mavis worked in the Churn Works Haverfordwest and then in grocery shops in Haverfordwest including the Star, Melias, Home and Colonial and Hupps in Portfield.

During WWII Mavis served in the Royal Observor Corps with her sister Margaret. Mavis met Dennis at a dance in Haverfordwest in the late 1950s and they married in 1961, and she helped Dennis when he was setting up his business Dreen Hill Motors on the Dale Road, and they built their home next to the garage.

They had one daughter Julie, and were delighted when Julie and Dave blessed them with their granddaughters Claire and Danielle, and Mavis took great pleasure in looking after the girls when their parents were working.

Mavis and Dennis enjoyed a busy social life when they were in good health, attending the ROAB club in Haverfordwest, and they were both members of the Royal British Legion and Normandy Veterans Association.

They went on many trips with the other veterans, including reunions in France and Holland.

After they retired they used to sell poppies for the Poppy Appeal every year. Mavis loved playing bingo, and watching Wales rugby matches on TV but her greatest love was her family of whom she was very proud. She was delighted to become a great-gran when Dani and her fiance Liam had Ollie in February this year.

Mavis had moved into Highgrove Haverfordwest in April 2017 when her decreasing mobility made it difficult for her to remain at home even with support from her family and Prestige Care. She was happy and well looked after in Highgrove and thought of the carers as friends.

Mavis was a strong and determined lady who was always full of life.

She was affectionately known to her friends and family and lately the staff at Highgrove and Ward 12 Withybush as “Mave the Rave”. She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends and all who knew and loved her and she will never be forgotten.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr Glyn Thomas, and donations in lieu of flowers if desired were requested for Ward 12 Withybush Hospital (c/o The Ward Manager, Ward 12) in grateful thanks for the excellent care that Mavis received there in her last weeks.
