IT would be “practically impossible” to introduce a temporary one-way system along Napier Street past the primary school during Cardigan Fair week.

Problems of traffic chaos and the dangers to young children coming out of school had been highlighted by Cllr Yvonne O’Neill at a previous meeting of Cardigan Town Council.

But at this month’s meeting, councillors were told that highways officials had rejected a suggestion of introducing a temporary one-way system.

“I have spoken to the highways department and there is not much the county council can do,” said Mayor Cllr John Adams-Lewis.

“It’s only for a few days during the fair and making it temporarily one-way is practically impossible and would also be very expensive to do.

“Perhaps the department could make Napier Street one-way permanently but I don’t think that would go down well with the people living there or the local business based there. There has also been a lot of money spent on the Active Travel plan, making Williams Terrace one-way and that has helped.

“I have spoken to the head teacher at the school and suggested that when the fair is here, the school should encourage parents to walk with their children rather than use cars.”

Councillors agreed that the presence of a traffic warden or a PCSO during fair week could help ease the situation.
