LOCAL concerns over possible damage to Cardigan Bridge following Storm Callum have been dismissed by National Resources Wales.

Cllr Graham Evans had raised the issue at a previous meeting of Cardigan Town Council, with trees and other debris trapped under the bridge and large amounts of silt deposited, altering the course of the river towards the Strand.

However, a reply from NRW said Ceredigion County Council was responsible for the bridge and the amount of debris and silt dumped during the storm would not affect tidal flow in the area or contribute to future flooding.

Cllr Evans said debris had been cleared from Llechryd bridge and the same should be done in Cardigan.

“If there is structural damage to the bridge it will affect everyone,” added Cllr Yvonne O’Neill.

NRW also dismissed fears that the River Mwldan posed an increased flood risk due to the amount of weed growth but that the situation would continue to be monitored.

Cllr John Adams-Lewis said: “I don’t know if they were wearing their glasses at Theatr Mwldan when they inspected. Why can’t they just clean out the channel? When the water comes down there, it will be blocked.”

The town council agreed to write to Ceredigion County Council to find out who is responsible for clearing debris.
