PLANS by Screwfix to open a new depot in Cardigan have been opposed by the town council.

The national retailer which supplies trade counter services to the building industry wants to open its new branch at unit seven at Parc Teifi Industrial Park and has lodged a planning application for change of use with Ceredigion County Council.

The company says the new depot would create four full-time jobs and eight part-time posts but members of Cardigan Town Council objected to the plans, saying it does not bring anything different to the town and would have a negative impact on existing family-run businesses in the area.

Deputy mayor Cllr Shan Williams said: “We don’t think we need a multi-national business threatening local family businesses in Cardigan.

“We must protect the sustainability of the local economy as much as we can. Letting this challenge family businesses is not something we can support.”

The town council’s objections will be forwarded to Ceredigion planning officers.
