NEW Quay RNLI lifeboat station has come to the rescue again to help restore a little bit of history to a station in Cornwall.

The cast iron handle had been stolen from the old lifeboat station at Penlee. Countless Penlee Lifeboat coxswains and crew members had turned it over the years and it was an important part of Penlee’s history.

New Quay station mechanic Bernie Davies saw Penlee Lifeboat’s post and remembered that he had a similar set of handles stored in his garage. Bernie removed them from the doors of the old New Quay Lifeboat Station when it was demolished and rebuilt in the early 1990s and they have been in storage ever since.

On November 7, Penlee Lifeboat Station welcomed Bernie and New Quay lifeboat operations manager Roger Crouch to the old Penlee Lifeboat Station at Mousehole where they presented the handles to coxswain Patch Harvey.

A New Quay spokesman said: “Now our two lifeboat stations have some shared history and we’re delighted that these old handles, turned so many times by generations of New Quay lifeboat crews, will be put to good use at Penlee.

“Best wishes to our colleagues at Penlee Lifeboat from all at New Quay Lifeboat Station.”
