A WARNING has been issued to be on the lookout for gas cylinders washed downstream from Llandysul during the weekend floods.

Firefighters from the town were called to Station Road, near the Tyweli River, at 11.45am on Sunday, where they were confronted with a strong smell of gas.

Approximately 60 gas cylinders were in the river and accumulated in a culvert. Western Power was also in called in to make safe a live electrical wire, from a three-phase electrical pumping station.

The fire service evacuated 12 properties from either side of the river and cordoned off Station Road for public safety.

Firefighters retrieved approximately 40 cylinders from the river and monitored the incident until the level of the flood water dropped.

The cordon has now been lifted and business owners and residents have returned to their properties but a warning has been issued as an unknown number of gas cylinders have been washed down stream.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service advises members of the public who may come across gas cylinders on the banks of the rivers Tyweli or Teifi, to leave the cylinders undisturbed and contact West Wales Gas on 01559 362000, between the hours of 8:30-5pm, or 07968 514324 outside of office hours, to arrange their safe collection.

The gas cylinders are propane or butane cylinders, of various sizes, and are blue or red in colour.
