PEOPLE in Cardigan are now able to access award-winning debt counselling thanks to a new partnership.

The Cardigan Debt Centre, which covers Cardigan and surrounding area, was officially launched on Sunday, September 23 at Mount Zion Church Cardigan in partnership with Christians Against Poverty, which has won numerous awards for its debt counselling.

Lynne Cunningham, Cardigan Debt Centre manager, said: “Debt can be so destructive, making people feel desperate and afraid to go out or answer the phone.

“Common reasons for debt include low income, relationship breakdown, joblessness, problems with benefits, illness or bereavement.”

She added that every client is visited in their own home, with the Debt Centre working with each person until they become debt free. Meanwhile, CAP’s head office specialists negotiate with creditors, create a budget and provide ongoing technical support.

CAP’s free service is available to anyone regardless of gender, faith or background.

The launch of the new centre was attended by Ben Lake, MP for Ceredigion and Stephen Crabb, MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire.

Rob Morgan, from Christians Against Poverty, spoke and described how the service can support people struggling with debt by offering a free face-to-face and caring service which gives both hope and a solution.
