THE Met Office has upgraded its severe weather warning for tomorrow with torrential rain and gale-force winds set to batter the Cardigan area.

Storm Callum has been upgraded from a yellow to an amber weather warning, which will cover a large part of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain between 6am on Friday and 6pm on Saturday, particularly over south-facing hills.

The Met Office has warned that homes and offices are likely to be flooded, with fast flowing or deep floodwater which could cause a danger to life.

Areas in the south and south west could see between 50 to 100mm of rain by the end of Friday, with as much as 120 to 160mm likely over high, south-facing ground.

On Saturday, areas over high ground could see a further 50 to 80mm of rain.

Winds of up to 60 mph are expected to hit the area, which combined with high tides could lead to some coastal impact due to large waves.

While heavy rain is expected to continue into Saturday, the wind is currently forecast to ease off by Friday evening.

The Met Office is also warning of possible disruption to transport services.

A Met Office spokesman said: “As Storm Callum passes to the northwest of the UK, a period of heavy rain will affect South Wales during Friday, with further spells of persistent and heavy rain at times during Saturday.

“The rain is expected to be accompanied by strong winds, which when combined with high tides may lead to some coastal impacts due to large waves. In addition, leaves and twigs, brought down by the wind, could block drains and culverts, increasing the likelihood of flooding.”
