NEWCASTLE Emlyn Rugby Club’s Chris Jones has been presented with a top award.

He has won the Ryan Jones Memorial Award for Outstanding Services to Sport after being shortlisted for this year’s Carmarthenshire Sports Personality Awards.

Chris, the club's long-serving secretary, said: "I knew I had been nominated but it was a complete shock to win it.

"It was a big surprise but I was quite touched. I have been doing the job for a long time and the club has come a long way in that period."

Winners from across the county were honoured for their achievements at Ffrwnes Theatre on Friday night (February 2).

The event, organised by Carmarthenshire County Council’s sport and leisure team, recognises and rewards people of all ages and abilities who contribute to sport in Carmarthenshire.

Executive board member for culture, sport and tourism, Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, said: “This was an excellent evening, celebrating the huge amount of sporting talent that we have in the county.”

Scarlets and Wales centre Jonathan Davies was named Sports Personality of the Year.
