Newcastle Emlyn Christmas Sheep Show and Sale

December 14

Despite the recent inclement weather, it stayed dry but cold for the annual gathering at Newcastle Emlyn, when a large company of sellers and supporters alike descended on the town, to upkeep the long standing tradition of the Christmas Fatstock Mart.

The judge for the day was experienced stockman Mr Gary Davies, Bercoed Uchaf, Pentrecwrt and he commented on the high volume and standard of lambs forward.

He eventually decided on his Champion Pen of four Texel Cross heavyweight lambs from Arwyn, Wendy, Rhodri and Deiniol Organ of Arwel, Coedybryn, who support the mart on a regular basis and were sold for 205.3p/kg to town butcher Mr Huw Davies of Messrs Dewi James and Co.

Standing reserve winners, were a pen of 5 Texel Cross lambs being in the medium weight category from staunch supporters Dylan and Mai Davies, Parce, Cwmcou and sold for 207.9p/kg, again to Huw Davies.

The top price per kilo confined to producers not having won a prize in the show classes, went this year to mart faithful Jason Powell, Blaenwern, Rhydlewis, with a strong pen of Texel Cross lambs. Top price store lambs went to veteran producer Gwesyn Williams, Trebwl, Bronwydd and the top price cull ewes went to the Organ Family with a cracking pen of 4 Texel Cross ewes.

Councillor Odette Little represented Newcastle Town Council, who had sponsored The Lamb Championships.

Mr Dewi Williams, Sunny Cottage, Newcastle Emlyn presented the various cups to the winners and we are very grateful for his kind donation of two new cups for this year’s proceedings.
