MOVES to develop a Sainsbury’s store in Cardigan as part of a £50millon regeneration project, which included a new hospital, remain on hold after a decade.

There has been no further progress at the Bathhouse site despite the supermarket giants developing a link road from the town to Gwbert Road at a cost of £4.5m.

With residents in the town and surrounding areas perplexed by the whole issue, Sainsbury’s this week continued to insist that their development programme is under review.

There have been major land stability problems at the site with many, including experts, of the view that it was unwise to proceed with a multi-store development on the land.

In November 2014 Sainsbury’s announced it was cutting costs and spending by stopping development of most of its proposed new stores.

Although the company was not specific which stores would be dropped a reliable source told the Tivy-Side: “Having been involved on the public relations side of the Cardigan development I can say that the proposed store at Bathhouse will not be built.”

This week a company spokesperson said “I’m afraid there is no update at this moment in time, the store is still in review.

“We’ll update as soon as we can.”
