FIRE devastated barns and outbuildings at a North Pembrokeshire farm early this morning.

A number of cows and pigs were rescued by firefighters at Lodor Fawr farm, near Rosebush, a family concern run by Benny and Rhiannon Thomas.

A number of hens, a cow and a sow with a litter died and Mr Thomas is waiting to receive veterinary advice about the condition of the other animals, which may all be seriously affected by smoke inhalation.

The blaze started at about 3am in the outbuildings near the farm house.

"We think it may have been caused by an electrical problem, which threw sparks onto the straw below," said Mr Thomas.

Firefighters from Crymych, Haverfordwest and Narberth fought the blaze. Crews using breathing apparatus were forced to leave the buildings when the structure started to collapse.

They were still there damping down and making safe at 12noon, more than eight hours after the fire started.
