ANTHONY Minghella’s vividly cinematic staging of Puccini’s tale of unrequited love returns to our screens with the Metropolitan Opera featuring soprano Hui He in the devastating title role of Madama Butterfly, screening live at Cardigan’s Theatr Mwldan on Thursday, November 14 (6.45pm).
One of the most frequently staged operas of our generation, Madama Butterfly follows the story of a young Japanese girl, Cio-Cio San, who falls in love with Pinkerton, an American naval officer.
Tragedy unfolds in this sweeping production, which is a perennial audience favourite.
Pier Giorgio Morandi conducts one of opera’s most beautiful and heartbreaking scores. Paulo Szot sings Sharpless and is joined by a cast that also includes tenor Piero Pretti as Pinkerton, and mezzosoprano Elizabeth DeShong as Suzuki.
Professional musician, teacher and opera enthusiast Idris Rees will be bringing back pre- show talks around the new Opera seasons and has this to say about what's in store...
" Madame Butterfly is a tragic opera and ends with yet another young lady dying - in this case committing suicide because her honour has been sullied by a young American sailor. A very beautiful opera, full of hope and yearning to see the father of her child again. All destroyed by the appearance of his American wife."
Pre-show talk in the art gallery space at 6.15pm.
Tickets are priced at £16 full price (£15 for concessions) and are available now from Theatr Mwldan’s box office on 01239 621 200, on-line at mwldan.co.uk or via our Mwldan app.
