PHOTO-BLOGGER and journalist Sarah Hoss opens a new photography exhibition at the Oriel Joanna Field Gallery at the Torch Theatre this Friday evening (June 7).

Learning to Fly (whilst falling) is an intimate portrayal of life in Pembrokeshire by Sarah whilst raising three children, one of whom has Down's Syndrome, in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

In a social media age, children's lives are documented on phones, Facebook and Instagram. This exhibition includes photographs taken on a traditional camera alongside candid digital shots. The images capture moments in time that shows the emergence of a young adult with Down's Syndrome, as the family seek to support this development mainly by just living each day and each moment together - while being willing to take risks.

“I’ve never seen a picture of a person with Down’s Syndrome in a gallery. It’s not something we celebrate for some reason. People with learning disabilities are still invisible in our society. Adults with Down’s overwhelmingly want to work and earn money and yet opportunities are rare. I wanted to do something to change that” said Sarah.

The family experience many trips and slips along the way while learning that falling and failing is part of the process until you finally take flight.

Learning to Fly (whilst falling) is a very personal story for Sarah and her son Geraint, alongside his sisters Elaina and Freya.

“The main subject is my son, Geraint, who is 18 and lives well with Down’s. It’s been such fun seeing his image blown up big and bold to cover the walls of an art gallery. The exhibition is also a big thank you to all those who have enjoyed playing a part in raising Geraint” added Sarah.

These private images capture moments of triumph and joy that have lifted this family to realise it can fly. This exhibition celebrates childhood, disability and the desire of a young family to ensure their most vulnerable member gets his wings.

Learning to Fly (whilst falling) by Sarah Hoss will be on display at the Oriel Joanna Field Gallery at the Torch Theatre from Friday, June 7, to Thursday, June 27. Entry is free.
