The Baghdaddies, described by the Glastonbury Review as, "our true festival heroes", will appear live at the Memorial Hall, Newport, on Saturday, 2nd May (doors 7pm) during the Newport Bay Spring Festival. "They are part of a variety of music to suit all tastes during the Festival," says one of the organisers. The riotous five-piece band are famous for their mix of original songs, traditional tunes sung in English and Welsh and their range covers pavement buskers' Gypsy-jazz to a Balkan wedding band frenzy which "they let rip with nothing held back." Add a theatrical element, a vocal style that pulsates with energy and their reputation is established as a festival favourite guaranteed to provide a fun evening. One of the band members grew up in the Newport area and he describes their music as: "The Baghdaddies pump out an eclectic fusion of rhythms and melodies plucked from around the world. From Balkan gypsy with Middle Eastern flavours, shades of klezmer and tango, jazz and reggae plus a touch of ska - all laced with funky dance grooves and blistering eastern brass harmonies, they are guaranteed to raise your spirits." A local fan says, "These guys hold nothing back; they give you the lot, the real deal and when I heard them at Glastonbury I loved it. Once experienced, never forgotten. I started buying their recordings after hearing them live. I can't quite believe they are coming to us." The evening also "promises entertainment from Klezmer Trio" with acclaimed supporting performers as well as "African Dancing from Marcel." With a Middle Eastern Cafe by Louise Cook, expected to be "stunningly delicious" the evening is anticipated as a highlight of the Pembrokeshire Musical and Social Calendar. Information on this and other events is available on the leaflets which are now freely and widely available in Newport.
