At the Institute's first meeting of 2009, members received the programme of speakers for the coming year - once again a most interesting and varied list. The Secretary also reported on the Mini Consultative Meeting and summarised the arguments for and against the Resolutions which had been suggested for the National AGM in June.

The speaker for the evening was Professor Angela John, biographer and historian, who gave a vivid account of the life and novels of Menna Gallie, internationally renowned author who lived in Newport until her death in 1990 and whose books included several based in the mining communities of South Wales where she grew up.

The next meeting will be at 7.00pm on Monday, 9th February, at Newport Boat Club, when the speaker will be Renate Thane describing the work of the Shalom Hospice at St. David's. Visitors and new members are always most welcome.
