The funeral of Glyn Rees, of Banc-y-Capel, Newport, took place on 29th December at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. He died peacefully at Manor House Nursing Home, Cowbridge, on 21st of December. He was 78.

He was brought up in Langloffan, and proud of his roots. Glyn secured an apprenticeship as a carpenter with the Brogod in Fishguard, followed by a political career as the Labour Party Agent in Pembrokeshire in the Desmond Donnelly era, where he met Penny, who he married and who was his rock during their long marriage.

In 1971, they bought The Golden Lion in Newport, which became almost world-famous, and there they stayed until retirement in 2000.

Glyn was Mayor of Newport on two occasions and during these periods raised considerable sums of money for good causes within the town. He also served on the Town Council, and was a County Councillor, working tirelessly for the residents and Town of Newport.

Whilst he had been involved in numerous improvements within the town, he was instrumental in raising and organising the financial support for the provision of the rugby pitch and it’s changing rooms in 1979, and both Penny and Glyn were tireless in their efforts for the Rugby Club from it’s infancy as a mini rugby club through to the advent of the full 15 in 1983, and the annual Sevens competition.

Glyn introduced Newport to Annapolis in Maryland USA, and from exchange trips some long and lasting friendships have developed.

His passion and dedication to causes were seen in his support of the licensed trade through the Pembrokeshire LVA of which he was chairman for many years, and also chairman of the British Institute of Innkeepers.

He dedicated many hours supporting the Noah’s Ark Appeal, the British Heart Foundation, and was a member of the Fishguard & Goodwick Rotary Club, being a past president, where he again raised funds to support charities at home, nationally and abroad. He was honoured by being made "Paul Harries Fellow" for his outstanding work for Rotary.

Family left to mourne are: Bethan and Martin, Delyth and Richard (daughters and son-in-laws) and grandchildren Thomas, Lucy and Rebecca, and his brothers Len, Idris and Gareth and their families, and countless friends.

The bearers were Stan Davies, Gareth Phillips, Chirs Lodge and Ted Skyring (all long standing friends).

Read by John Denley in a tribute to "Dad" his daughters wrote..."What a man, what a legend". "You will always live on in our hearts and memories".

Tomas (grandson) asked, "if I see two stars together now Mummy…will that be Grandma and Grandad?" The answer was "Yes". "Those stars will twinkle always, as you both did in life Dad, you will now and forever more".
