Former County Councillor Glyn Rees a past Mayor of Newport and popular landlord, with his late wife Penny, of the town's Golden Lion Hotel, has died in a Cardiff Nursing Home.
Cllr Rees, who was a prodigious charity fund-raiser, was the first Political Agent for Pembrokeshire MP Desmond Donnelly, while his wife was constituency secretary.
He represented Newport on the County Council and was due to take the chair when he was defeated in the polls a few years ago. He leaves a grown-up family and other relatives and many friends.
Cllr Rees was also a member of the Court Leet, and was greatly involved in providing sports facilities for local youngsters.
He retired from Newport Town Council last year after over 40 years of service to the town.
During his years of service he was instrumental in setting up Newport rugby club, opening the changing rooms and building the new school.
Town Council Chairman Paul Harries said: "He did a fantastic amount for Newport.
"As a council we will miss his wisdom, and as a town we will miss his input."
