Rugby round-up

12:39pm Monday 21st April 2008

Despite not reaching the heights of late Cardigan sprang a 24-7 win over Pembroke Dock Quins at King George V Playing Field and earned a vital bonus point as they stayed on course for the runners-up spot in Division 3 West.

Typifying the tremendous team spirit and camaraderie in the camp talented fullback Dafydd Evans played with a heavily bandaged shoulder after sustaining an injury against Laugharne the previous Saturday.

Speaking exclusively to the Tivy-Side afterwards Evans said: "I played today for head coach Derek Burton who does not have the word pain in his dictionary.

"Everyone is pulling together and I hope our supporters turn out in force to cheer us on against Amman United in the Amman Valley this Saturday and at Laugharne in the final game the following weekend," he said.

Leading by example once again Colin Trigger' Davies was inspirational and sprang the fourth try near the end that earned his side a bonus point.

Others to stand out were openside flanker Markus Heighton who tackled everything that moved, winger Rob Davies, loose head prop Richard Jones and centre Aled Jones.

It was Aled Jones who opened his side's account when acting as a decoy at the back of the scrum and going over for a try in the corner.

In a catch and drive move lock Mathew James won possession at a Quins lineout and prop Owain Evans crashed over to double the try count.

Skipper Davies picked up and put scrum-half Arwyn Wilson in to double the try count and the former added the extras to make it 17-0 at the break.

The Cardis applied lengthy spells of pressure in an attempt to notch a fourth try but had to wait until near the end when Colin Davies went over from close range.

Also in Division Three mid table Newcastle Emlyn took the lead against Aberystwyth at Plascrug with a try by outside half Rhydian Harries, who converted the score and landed a penalty.

But Aber came back strongly, led 15-8 after the opening 40 minutes and eventually won 39-8.

Crymych returned to the straight and narrow in Division 4 West with a 28-7 win against lowly Neyland. For the visitors there were tries by Martin Jones, Cenydd James, Eurig Davies and Andrew Thomas all four touchdowns converted by Carwyn Jones.
