The Cardigan Golf Club Junior section held their President Competition earlier this month. A good number of entries on the day and Ben Harvey came in 1st with Ben James taking 2nd place, third was Jack Brookes, all three were presented their prizes from Club President Lyn Scott.

Cardigan Golf Club held the President's Prize Medal on Saturday 19 July generously sponsored by Club President, Lin Scott. There were 57 entries who enjoyed beautiful golfing conditions once again. The winner with a nett 64 playing off a handicap of 18 was Gerallt Morris. In second place with a nett 67 playing off 5 was Martyn Thomas. Lyndsay Morgan came third on count back with a nett 68 playing off 5, and Len Wooldridge came fourth also with a nett 68 playing off 11. The winner of the Past President's Prize was Hywelfryn Jones. The nearest the pin winner was Stuart Davies and Craig Pope had the longest drive. The best gross score was won by Martyn Thomas with 72.

Pictured are a small group of swimmers from Cardigan Swimming Club, who recently took part in the Annual Cardiff Bay Sprint Meet. Megan and Chloe Fletcher, Dafydd Nicholls and Rhys Davies. All four competitors swam well, obtaining personal best times and all four made the finals. Rhys Davies won silver in the Backstroke and Silver in the 200 IM final, and Dafydd won Gold in Breast, Silver in Butterfly, Bronze in Backstroke and Bronze in the 200 Im final.

The sun shone on another beautiful evening as over 150 runners took part in the second race of Cardigan Running Club's Poppit Sands three race series last Tuesday. 48 youngsters ran the Junior Race, sponsored by Llwynhelyg farm shop, which was won by 11 year old Daniel Jones, whilst 103 ran the senior race was won by Dylan Lewis, both winners representing the Sarn Helen Club. Don't miss your last chance to take part in the third and final race of the 2014 series next Tuesday 29th July (7pm Juniors, 7.30pm adults), experienced runners, enthusiastic joggers, locals or tourists you're all welcome to give it a go and get some sand in those running shoes.

Cardigan Golf Club held the Ian Thomas Memorial Cup on Thursday 10 July. This Seniors stableford competition was well supported with 37 entries in glorious golfing conditions. Once again, the course was presented in excellent condition which led to some good scoring. The winner with 43 points playing off a handicap of 10 was Keith Fidoe. In second place with a score of 41 points was Phil Daniel playing off 7, and in third place on countback was Keith Rose with 40 points playing off 12

Cardigan maintained a challenge for the Division One title with a 29-shot away win over Aberystwyth that gave the southerners ten points but leaders Lampeter banked two points more than their rivals thanks to a 22-shot win at New Quay.

On Tuesday, the Cilgerran Short-Mat Bowling Club met to hold their sixth Ossie Bravey competition. Fourteen members attended and were paired up to play their games. The usual adult members were joined this time by three youngsters who played exceedingly well.

The first of the popular three race series Poppit Sands race was held on Tuesday 1st July with Eliza Martin leading home the one lap junior race and Felipe Jones winning the two lap adult race. On a beautifully warm evening the sand was unforgiving but there were a creditable 31 finishers in the junior race and 109 finishers in the adult 5K race. The next two races in the series are to be held on Tuesday 15th July and Tuesday 29th July (7pm junior and 7.30pm senior) entry for either race can be taken on the evening. Good weather unfortunately can not be guaranteed but if it is wet, take consolation from the sand being easier to run on.

A successful New 2 Golf coaching programme supported by Golf Development Wales, aimed at juniors new to the game recently resulted in all participants being presented with a certificate for passing the course. The coaching programme consisted of twelve hours of professional coaching on Saturday mornings over recent months. All participants who have joined Cardigan Golf Club following the coaching now move on to the nationally recognised Junior Passport scheme, allowing them to track their progress and development. All the coaching was undertaken by Cardigan Golf Club PGA professional Steven Parsons, aided by many of the members, some of whom had gone through a similar coaching programme years ago and are now single figure handicap players.

Cardigan Golf Club held its premier golfing competition on Sunday 29 June, the 36 hole scratch strokeplay championship generously sponsored once again by Pat and Lil Malloy. An excellent turnout of 39 low handicap club golfers enjoyed excellent golfing weather on a golf course presented in superb condition once again. The winner of the competition for the 10th time was Rich Emanuel with scores of 72 and 73 (145) playing off plus 2 handicap. In second place with scores of 75 and 73 (148) was James Pegg and Rob Clark came third with scores of 73 and 78 (151).

Jane Norris, 44, from Llandysul took first place in the Cob class at the South Essex Insurance Broker’s (SEIB) Search for a Star 2014 qualifier, held at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre in Gloucestershire. Riding her horse, Farmhill Apache, Jane fought off stiff competition from other riders in the class to gain qualification for the Horse of The Year Show.

A small but successful group of swimmers from Cardigan Swimming Club recently competed at the Torfaen Dolphin Open Meet at the Newport International Sports Village. Megan and Chloe Fletcher and Elin Nicholls pictured competed in the smaller Level 4 meet and medalled in all their events. Megan won Gold in the 100 IM, 100 Freestyle, 200 IM, 100m Fly and 100m Backstroke and Bronze in the 100m Breaststroke. Chloe won Silver in 100m Fly, 100m IM, 100 Breast, 100m Free and 200m IM. Elin won Silver in the 100m Breaststroke and 100m IM, and Bronze in 100m Fly and 100m Freestyle. Dafydd Nicholls and Rhys Davies pictured, competed in the bigger Level 2 meet amidst stiff competition both swam well and medalled at the meet. Congratulations also to Rhys who recently competed at the Cardiff International Meet, representing Cardigan Swimming Club.

The most prestigious event on the KUGB (Karate Union of Great Britain) Wales Shotokan karate calendar was recently held in Rhydycar, Merthyr Tydfil. The Welsh Championships 2014 saw students from all over Wales compete for their club and individual titles. Tekki RS was out in force and was well represented from students from all six clubs, Aberystwyth, Aberaeron, Newcastle Emlyn, Llandysul, Cardiff and Cwmbran. The standard was exceptionally high throughout the tournament from the new kyu grades, of which many had never competed before, to the regular dan grades and Tekki RS achieved many medals in various categories. The highest accolade possible was awarded to Tekki RS as the Best Club in Wales 2014 with the following medallists from Emlyn & Llandysul clubs contributing to the illustrious title:

History was made at Parc y Scarlets on Sunday May 19th as Crymych under 14’s won the Scarlets Cup. The same team of players had previously won the cup two years ago and so become the first team ever from Pembrokeshire to win the cup for a second time.

Captain's charity day in Cwmrhydneuadd golf club. A big thank you to all that took part in raising money for Cardigan Cancer Care, and Hafan Deg in Lampeter. Just over £1000 was raised. The winners were 'the but buts' second 'y ffos' and third 'New Inn' Meurig Davies had his first hole in one on the 12th.

Local side saddle rider Helen Thomas, had a memorable Aberystwyth County show over the weekend when she was awarded the Supreme Champion title. Riding her seven year old mare Summer Time Lady Too, by local stallion Still Time Left, the pair won the Side Saddle Equitation Class, the Large Riding Horse, and then the championship before taking Supreme of Show.

Gareth Davies of Newcastle Emlyn who made a big impact when coming on as a substitute for Wales in the Test defeat against South Africa at the weekend is being tipped to replace 31-year-old Mike Phillips in the starting line-up for the second Test in Nelspruit this Saturday.

The swimmers recently competed in the Amman Valley Open held in Carmarthen. All swam well, with some excellent personal best times. Ruben Kruger won a bronze medal in the 50m Butterfly, and Dafydd Nicholls won Gold in the 400m Individual Medley and Bronze in 100m Breaststroke and 100m Butterfly.

After a very successful season winning the South Ceredigion Junior League with 27 points with a goal difference of 32, Ffostrasol under 14s were eligible to try for the League Cup. Meeting Aberaeron in the semi on neutral ground Newquay, Ffostrasol came away with a 4-2 win. Finals day on Saturday, 31st May at Cardigan where Penparc, who won their semi against Newcastle Emlyn, were there to battle it out for the Cup. Ffostrasol scored 4 goals in the first half but conceded a goal by way of a penalty in the second half. A triumphant win for the whites of 4-1. Here they are with their League trophies and Cup trophies.

The wet weather virtually wiped out the fixture list in the Pembroke County Cricket League on Saturday when only one of 28 fixtures was completed in six divisions. All other games were cancelled or abandoned.

Tenby Dog Racers start their season holding a trials meeting on Thursday June 5th. At Marsh Farm Tenby (opposite the Leisure Centre) and will again this year be running all race meetings for charities and other good courses.
