Cardigan Golf Club had a busy bank holiday weekend with 3 competitions held together with a very successful barbecue on Saturday evening enjoyed by over 200 members and guests. On Saturday, the Millennium Mixed Trophy was won by Peter and Nicola Ward with 45 stableford points. In second place was Keith and Yvonne Phillips with 42 points. On Sunday, the Eivryn James Challenge Bowl attracted an excellent entry of 61. The winner of this medal competition was Ifan Jones with a nett 69 playing off a handicap of 24. In second place on count back was Barrie Davies with a nett 71 playing off 14, and in third place, again on count back, was Andrew Rodda, also with a nett 71 playing off 4. On Bank Holiday Monday, the Bendal Cup only attracted 19 entries due to the poor weather conditions. The winner was Lyndsay Morgan with a nett 70 playing off a handicap of 6. In second place was James Pegg with a nett 72 playing off 2, and in third place was Steffan Evans with a nett 74 playing off 4.

Medalists were Hannah Pusey Gold in Beach sprint, Bronze in 1Km run and Bronze in Board Rescue with Menna Phillips. Menna also had Bronze in Sea Swim and Ocean Lady and Silver in Ski Relay with Bethan Phillips and Lowri Davies and Gold in Double Ski with Lowri Davies. Lowri also had silver in Single Ski and Ocean Lady. Alfie Bodenham received a Silver in Flags and Bronze in Double Ski with Morgan Davies. Dafydd Nicholls won Bronze in Sea Swim and Board. Professional Darts Corporation star Jamie Lewis came out on top in the Hope & Anchor Summer Singles Open League in Cardigan when beating Clive Lewis of Pembrokeshire 6-2 in the final. The 22-yiear-old ace was within a whisker of achieving a fabulous 9-darter in the final.

Not even the thunder and heavy showers could prevent members of the Tivyside Pony Club from hosting an extremely successful Pony Club camp at the property of Tracey and Anton Maczka of Capel Iwan. A huge thanks goes to the Maczka family for great hospitality and welcome. The three day camp attended by 11 members between the ages of 8 and 12 consisted of flat work, show jumping, gymkhana, stable management and a very enjoyable paddling evening with the Llandysul Paddlers. They also heated marshmallows over an open fire and took full responsibility for looking after their own ponies. On the final day, the members took part in a show and were awarded a fistful of rosettes and trophies for their efforts. The children were taught by local instructors Dawn Hodson and Hope Davies and helped by two older PC members, Ffion and Merlin. The camp was organised by PC District Commissioner, Julie Hodson.

Cardigan Golf Club Captain Keith Lewis held his Captain's Day on Saturday 9 August. The weather held and a fine entry of 84 turned out to enjoy some generous hospitality and the excellent prizes on offer. The winner of this stroke play medal was Rob Clark with an excellent score of 68 nett, playing off a handicap of 3. In second place on count back was Derek Quinnell with 68 nett, playing off 13, Dai Parry Morgan came third with 70 nett playing off 17, and Chris Barrass came fourth on count back with a nett 71 playing off 5. The winner of the longest drive was Henry Malloy. The winners of the nearest the pin were Rob Clark (6th) and Peter Ward (16th). The Past Captain's Prize was won by Tom Davies with a nett 72 playing off 6, and the Best Gross prize was won by Rob Clark with 71

Cardigan Golf Club held the President's Prize Medal on Saturday 19 July generously sponsored by Club President, Lin Scott. There were 57 entries who enjoyed beautiful golfing conditions once again. The winner with a nett 64 playing off a handicap of 18 was Gerallt Morris. In second place with a nett 67 playing off 5 was Martyn Thomas. Lyndsay Morgan came third on count back with a nett 68 playing off 5, and Len Wooldridge came fourth also with a nett 68 playing off 11. The winner of the Past President's Prize was Hywelfryn Jones. The nearest the pin winner was Stuart Davies and Craig Pope had the longest drive. The best gross score was won by Martyn Thomas with 72.

Pictured are a small group of swimmers from Cardigan Swimming Club, who recently took part in the Annual Cardiff Bay Sprint Meet. Megan and Chloe Fletcher, Dafydd Nicholls and Rhys Davies. All four competitors swam well, obtaining personal best times and all four made the finals. Rhys Davies won silver in the Backstroke and Silver in the 200 IM final, and Dafydd won Gold in Breast, Silver in Butterfly, Bronze in Backstroke and Bronze in the 200 Im final.

The sun shone on another beautiful evening as over 150 runners took part in the second race of Cardigan Running Club's Poppit Sands three race series last Tuesday. 48 youngsters ran the Junior Race, sponsored by Llwynhelyg farm shop, which was won by 11 year old Daniel Jones, whilst 103 ran the senior race was won by Dylan Lewis, both winners representing the Sarn Helen Club. Don't miss your last chance to take part in the third and final race of the 2014 series next Tuesday 29th July (7pm Juniors, 7.30pm adults), experienced runners, enthusiastic joggers, locals or tourists you're all welcome to give it a go and get some sand in those running shoes.

Poppit Sands race

The first of the popular three race series Poppit Sands race was held on Tuesday 1st July with Eliza Martin leading home the one lap junior race and Felipe Jones winning the two lap adult race. On a beautifully warm evening the sand was unforgiving but there were a creditable 31 finishers in the junior race and 109 finishers in the adult 5K race. The next two races in the series are to be held on Tuesday 15th July and Tuesday 29th July (7pm junior and 7.30pm senior) entry for either race can be taken on the evening. Good weather unfortunately can not be guaranteed but if it is wet, take consolation from the sand being easier to run on.

Junior golf coaching programme

A successful New 2 Golf coaching programme supported by Golf Development Wales, aimed at juniors new to the game recently resulted in all participants being presented with a certificate for passing the course. The coaching programme consisted of twelve hours of professional coaching on Saturday mornings over recent months. All participants who have joined Cardigan Golf Club following the coaching now move on to the nationally recognised Junior Passport scheme, allowing them to track their progress and development. All the coaching was undertaken by Cardigan Golf Club PGA professional Steven Parsons, aided by many of the members, some of whom had gone through a similar coaching programme years ago and are now single figure handicap players.

Cardigan Golf Club held its premier golfing competition on Sunday 29 June, the 36 hole scratch strokeplay championship generously sponsored once again by Pat and Lil Malloy. An excellent turnout of 39 low handicap club golfers enjoyed excellent golfing weather on a golf course presented in superb condition once again. The winner of the competition for the 10th time was Rich Emanuel with scores of 72 and 73 (145) playing off plus 2 handicap. In second place with scores of 75 and 73 (148) was James Pegg and Rob Clark came third with scores of 73 and 78 (151).

Local amateur rider qualifies for Horse of the Year Show

Jane Norris, 44, from Llandysul took first place in the Cob class at the South Essex Insurance Broker’s (SEIB) Search for a Star 2014 qualifier, held at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre in Gloucestershire. Riding her horse, Farmhill Apache, Jane fought off stiff competition from other riders in the class to gain qualification for the Horse of The Year Show.
