Super Blues crowned champions

History was made in Cardigan on Saturday when super Maesglas became the first club to capture the Costcutter Ceredigion League championship in the first season after promotion.

With St Dogmaels springing a 3-2 win against Crannog the previous evening pressure was on Darren Williams and colleagues who had to bank three points against Llandysul to relieve Saints of the title.

And after the Blues did the business in emerging 6-1 winners one of the first to sportingly offer his congratulations was Saints manager Wayne Jones.

"It has been a tremendous achievement by Maesglas in winning the title at the first attempt. Very few gave them a chance at the start of the season, but manager Paul Jones has done a brilliant job and the team has won playing attractive football. They deserved it and good luck them," he said.

At the School Field skipper Ioan Owen put Saints ahead but the visitors equalised when sweeper Steve Blackford put through hi sown goal and they went ahead before the Greens hit back with goals by Owen and Lee Burrows.

Any hopes held by Saints that Llandysul would do them a favour were shattered after barely six minutes at Maes Radley when Blues striker Chris Hope' Jones lobbed home the first goal.

Phil Furney doubled the lead with a far post header and Chris Jones made it 3-0 from the penalty spot before the interval.

The same tempo continued during the second period as Furney made it 4-0, right-sided midfielder Mathew Smith headed the fifth goal and vastly experienced defender Rueben Wells completed the rout at a corner. Huw Evans converted a penalty for the visitors but by then the Blues were cruising.

As the celebrations began in earnest Blues manager Paul Jones said: "We came with a great run to win the title and I'd like to say a big thank you to all the players, the backroom staff who have been great, our supporters and also the sponsors and in particular Julian Palmer of Derw Glass who has given us tremendous support."
