Vintage win for Maesglas

Maesglas 4 Lampeter 2 Costcutter Ceredigion Football League Any lingering doubts over Maesglas coming of age were dispelled as the young Blues turned in a super-charged performance in defeating a strong Lampeter outfit 4-2 at Maes Radley.

It was vintage stuff from Darren Williams and Co during the opening 45 minutes, and reminiscent of their predecessors who swept all before them in the 1980s.

Spraying the ball about accurately at high pace Maesglas ran their opponents ragged during that opening period, and although the visitors came more into contention after change of ends the Cardigan high-flyers never looked like letting matters slip.

The threat caused by Town striker Mark Wilkins did not materialise such was the dominance of back four Michael Diggle, Darren Williams, Ricky Maskell and Mathew Latchy Smith, while Lampeter midfielder Osian Williams was overshadowed by Huw Meredith, Dean Winney and Dai Cole.

Maesglas went ahead in the opening quarter when the effervescent Cole outstripped the defence and placed a shot wide of Darren Gregson.

The lead was doubled when a Darren Williams 40-yard free kick sailed over Gregson and dipped in under the crossbar.

Town halved the deficit when Meredith was harshly adjudged to have handled inside the penalty area, and Wilkins converted the spot kick.

Back came the rampant Blues with a quality strike by ex-Cardigan Town striker Phil Furney.

The front-runner picked up the ball out on the left and sent a great low shot into the corner of the net past a helpless Gregson.

Soon afterwards Furney was put in the clear and as Gregson advanced coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Continuing to dominate, the Blues went within a whisker of increasing the lead a minute before the interval when a Winney header thumped against the crossbar.

With nothing to lose the visitors threw caution to the wind during the second period and pulled a goal back when substitute Luke Parish netted in style.

At the other end Dominic Williams sent an effort thudding against the woodwork, and despite having to soak up pressure Maesglas held out for maximum points and a share of the leadership.
