Football referees have refused to officiate at matches involving Costcutter League club St Dogmaels in a continuing row over alleged comments made on Facebook.

Match officials were holding a further meeting last night (Monday) to consider an apology by the north Pembrokeshire village club, currently unbeaten and top of Division One.

Saturday’s fixture between St Dogmaels and Aberaeron Reserves was called off as was the Division Two game between Newcastle Emlyn Reserves and their Saints counterparts.

Referees felt strongly over alleged social media comments by St Dogmaels first team manager Steve Jerry Williams in relation to a game on the final day of last season.

A Central Wales Football Association disciplinary committee suspended the manager for three seasons and imposed a £500 fine, but on appeal the Football Association of Wales reduced the ban to six games and the fine to £120.

After the appeal hearing Williams stressed that he had the utmost respect for referees.

The Tivy-Side can reveal that since the announcement and following a meeting attended by three of the 12 registered referees, a player contacted the Costcutter League expressing strong opposition to the stand taken by match officials.

With the School Field ground deserted at the weekend a source at St Dogmaels FC said: “The club has apologised and will now wait and see what the referees decide on Monday.”

Central Wales Football Association assistant referees secretary Dylan Griffiths told the Tivy-Side: “I have no comment to make while the issue is continuing.”
