There was no success for local clubs on the second day of the season as Cardigan were thrashed by Llanybydder in Division 3 West, Newcastle Emlyn slipped up at home against Laugharne in the same division, while Crymych were beaten by a late score at Pembroke.
When promoted Cardigan and Llanybydder met at King George V Playing Field last term the visitors came out on top by a narrow margin. But on this occasion Llan swept to a 30-3 win to go top, while defeat left the Cardis at the bottom of the pile.
Cardigan launched numerous counter attacks, but lacked penetration in the middle of the pitch, and against a resolute Llan defence rarely threatened to cross the try line.
The visitors had a shining star in outside half Barry Thomas. Making his first appearance of the season the standoff crossed for a try, landed three penalties and converted all three of his side's tries.
Gareth Jones and Bob Dyer also sprang tries for the visitors while Cardigan's points came from a penalty by outside half Kevin Evans.
Seven days after an opening day win Newcastle Emlyn went down 12-10 against an under strength Laugharne at Ddol Wyber.
The Teifisiders won plenty of possession, but were guilty of kicking it away, especially during the second period.
A tap penalty move culminated in home centre Gethin Davies going over for a try wide out, and outside half Rhydian Harries converted with a superb kick from the touchline.
The visitors replied with a corner try by lock Chris Thomas who finished off a good passing movement, and shortly afterwards outside half Simon Davies was given an opportunity to put them ahead with a penalty in front of the posts, but unaccountably missed the target.
Fly half Harries increased the Emlyn advantage with a penalty, but Laugharne pressure brought reward when Simon Davies made a half break and put centre Nick Thomas over under the posts. Davies converted to win the game.
Crymych were a shade unfortunate to go down 28-25 at Pembroke in Division 4 West after matching their opponents in every department, and holding the lead with barely five minutes remaining.
A late try by centre Mark Williams who followed up his grubber kick won the game for the Pembrokeshire Scarlets.
The home side crossed for three further tries courtesy of flanker Luke Harford, centre Gary Pickering and right-winger Geraint Jackson while outside half Scott Bowen landed a penalty and converted two of the touchdowns.
Hooker Trystan Griffiths, fullback Carwyn Jones, centre Elgan Vittle and winger Aled Bowen notched tries for the Preselimen with the remainder of the points coming from the boot of fullback Jones.
