THERE was every reason to celebrate at Newcastle Emlyn Leisure Centre recently.

As well as Teifi Valley Squash Team being promoted from the Pembrokeshire League to the South Wales League, two members of the team have achieved international honours.

Annette Davies has played more than 100 times for Wales while her daughter Nia Teifi Davies received her first cap this season. Congratulations were also offered to Paul Leonard who recently celebrated his 80th birthday.

Paul played for the Wales Squash over-75 team in British Masters Championship in Dublin. Born in Ireland,he came to Wales in1959 having previously played handball.

He beat his Irish opponent 3-2 ensuring that Wales did not finish bottom.

Paul has played squash for both Cardigan and NCE squash teams. He was presented with a decanter by Nia Teifi Davies on behalf of Teifi Valley Squash Club. He has also been installed in Squash Wales Hall of Fame.

Carmarthenshire County Council was represented by Peter Hughes Griffiths, chairman of the Leisure Committee and local councillor Hazel Evans. Also in attendance was Peter Crook, representing Squash Wales.
