First win for Llechryd

Having slipped into the Pembroke County Cricket League Division Two relegation zone there was a shake-up at Llechryd including all-rounder John Curran taking over as skipper from Graham Keen.

In the wake of a disastrous run, a call to arms from Keen appeared to galvanise his team-mates who opened their account with a 29-run away win over fourth in the table Hook and moved out of the drop zone.

Back in the fold Rhys Beard, a former club captain went after the home attack from the word go as he entertained in scoring 55 and at the other end Curran, who a few season ago became the club's youngest captain, contributed 57.

Both batsmen were removed by medium-pacer Aled Phelps who snapped three wickets with his father Jamie picking up one wicket.

Further down the order Joe Mansfield made 29 and Adam Petts also reached double figures.

Hook were on the ropes early on when slumping to 17-3 and they appeared sitting ducks at 43-6 as super veteran seamer Peter Betterley grabbed four wickets.

Ex-skipper Keen, who stood down because of work commitments, picked up three wickets and there was one apiece for his successor Curran and Andrew Fletcher.

Hook refused to capitulate as Brennan Martin wielded the willow and hit a number of boundaries in a fine innings of 73.

As the home side recovered from a poor start and were heading for an unlikely victory a superb catch at deep mid-on by Dewi Davies dismissed Martin and that was that as Llechryd regained the initiative.

Virtually doomed Division Three basement boys Llechryd 2nds held fifth in the table visitors Lawrenny 2nds to a draw at the RDM Oval.

Having been put in the visitors took full advantage of a lighting fast outfield as they scored all round the wicket in posting an imposing total of 247-2.

Returning from injury Steve Lewis was at his brilliant best in making an unbeaten 116 and was given support from Alfie Buckle (57 not out) and Hugh Griffiths (50).

It was a hard day in the field for the Teifisiders but they stuck to the task with 14-year-old Daf Davies showing his potential by taking a wicket in his nine overs.

After losing two early wickets at the Recreation Ground the Teifi Valley visitors recovered in some style and at the close were 218-5.

Llechryd openers Ollie Roberts (78) and Ben Graham (54) starred with the bat.
