FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Champagne corks popped after Lampeter Town showed nerves of steel to come from behind and spring a last gasp dramatic winning goal from the penalty spot against visitors Newcastle Emlyn and lift the Costcutter League

Division One title.

Having sat on top of the league for most of the season, Lampeter appeared to have blown their chance of pouching the silverware after a few hiccups but needing three points in the final game against title rivals Emlyn the mid county high-flyers came up trumps.

The club's first title since season 2008-09 was a fitting tribute to manager Terry Jones who has stood down after 11 years at the helm.

Players and supporters joined in euphoric scenes at the final whistle after a pulsating game, the result of which appeared to an Emlyn win until Town stage a late revival to pip their opponents 2-1 and deny St Dogmaels

the title.

As Lampeter trailed by a solitary goal St Dogmaels were romping to a 3-0 win at Ffostrasol and on the way to glory, but that all changed as the North Road lads turned things around.

With the action intensifying at North Road leading marksman Jake Kelly fired Emlyn ahead before the interval and it looked like curtains for Town who trailed in the 89th minute.

Then Scymon Konwiak put the homesters back on level terms and nearly five minutes into injury time from a throw in referee Llyr Evans adjudged that a Lampeter player was brought down inside the penalty area and he awarded a spot-kick

Over the years former skipper Terry Witts has netted countless penalties and the defender kept up the good work in stroking the ball home to start ecstatic celebrations.

It was goalless at Ffostrasol at half-time but the visitors raided the tempo during the second period and ran out winners with goals by Peter Almond, Dan Jones and Chris Morgan.

With the game at Lampeter starting late Saints had to wait for about 30 minutes to know if they would be crowned champions but in the end it was crushing disappointment as the Teifi Estuary villagers were forced to settle for the runners-up spot.

As the celebrations got underway in earnest at Lampeter a club spokesperson said: "The lads have been superb throughout the season and they and everyone connected with the club join in extending best wishes for the

future to manager Terry Jones."

The two Bay Cup semi-finals take place tonight (Tuesday) with Dewi Stars hosting Newcastle Emlyn and St Dogmaels at home against Crannog.

Saints reached the last four after a hard-earned 3-2 win over arch-rivals Cardigan Town at King George V Playing Field, a tie that was marred by two players receiving their marching orders from referee Eirian Morgan.

Following a second half clash Llion Williams, who got one of the home goals, and Aarron Williams of St Dogmaels were shown red.

During the opening 45 minutes Ben Davies netted a penalty for the Magpies and Peter Almond was on target for Saints.

Chris Jones hit the second goal for the visitors and substitute Mike Diggle got the winner in the final quarter.

Crannog went through after a 2-1 win over Cilgerran Rovers at Parc Y Dre, Newcastle Emlyn sprang a 3-1 home last eight win over Felinfach while Dewi stars were given a walkover when New Quay failed to raise a team.
