FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

The final competition in the Costcutter Ceredigion League programme – the Cardigan Bay Cup – saw Crannog, St Dogmaels, Felinfach, Newcastle Emlyn and Cilgerran Rovers reach the second round.

Long-time league leaders Lampeter Town, St Dogmaels and Emlyn are still involved in the Division One title race, but it was all about the Bay Cup at the weekend.

After recently completing a seven-day league double and possibly ending Emlyn's hopes of lifting the title in form St Dogmaels whacked a youthful Ffostrasol 6-1 at Troedyrhiw Park, a result that must give Saints confidence for their final league encounter at the south Ceredigion ground.

With Ffostrasol attention focused on tonight's Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies final against Emlyn at Aberystwyth's Park Avenue, the league strugglers rested a number of regulars and were no match for the visitors

who were themselves understrength.

Saints fell behind early on but speedy striker Rhys Jones and central midfielder Adam Williams turned things around with goals before the interval.

As the Teifi Estuary villagers dominated during the second period replacement Mike Diggle, who was particularly sharp, Dan Jones, Peter Almond and Macally Evans made it a breeze for the visitors.

Even with nine first team players unavailable Emlyn showed the value of a strong squad with a 2-0 win over visitors Lampeter at Parc Emlyn.

The Reds included no fewer than six second teamers but they were not overawed and produced a quality performance.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes Dion Phillips and Gethin Harries netted for the homesters who fluffed a number of other opportunities.

Reigning league champions Llandysul are ending the campaign on a low note after a midweek 1-0 defeat at Cilgerran and went down 2-1 at Felinfach despite holding a solitary goal lead at the break.

Jason White and Sam Garside were the second half goal heroes for the Milkmen.

In the other two ties Crannog of Division One sprang a 2-0 win over Second Division Llanboidy while Cilgerran Rovers emerged 3-2 winners over Maesglas at Parc y Dre.
