AT NEARLY 85 years of age most men could be excused for choosing an armchair and slippers over playing in a pool league.
But Edmundo Martinez is a lot different to many his age as he regularly turns out for the Bowling Club team in the Cardigan & District League.
Not satisfied with holding his own against opponents, including teenagers, the octogenarian stunned everyone by becoming the oldest player in the 33-year history of the league to achieve an eight-ball clearance.
The second oldest cueist for the Bowling Club is 75-year-old Bill Alford with Bill’s grandson Billy Howell the youngest aged 15 – but it was all about Edmundo in the game between Llew Coch and Bowling Club at the Red Lion Inn.
After the super veteran conceded three fouls his opponent Mark Bellotti was left on the black but then the old-stager turned on the style in potting all his seven balls and the black to huge applause from players and pub-goers.
The only disappointing aspect for Edmundo was his achievement could not lift his team-mates who went down to a 6-4 defeat.
On a night that will be remembered for Edmundo’s heroics Red Lion won 7-3 against Clwb Rygbi in the rugby clubhouse to retain the championship with Lamb A as runners-up.
