FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

With the end of the season drawing closer, matters are hotting up at the top of the Costcutter League Division One with many followers of the view that the title race is now between top two Lampeter Town and St Dogmaels.

At the other end of the table Dewi Stars have been relegated and Cilgerran Rovers appear likely to join them in the drop.

The Newcastle Emlyn championship challenge has stuttered after the Reds dropped six points in seven days against in-form St Dogmaels.

After a 4-1 win over their rivals in the Teifi Estuary village, Saints rose to the occasion again seven days later when emerging 2-1 winners at Parc Emlyn.

It was a closely-fought affair the second time around with perhaps the visitors just shading matters to keep up the pressure on Lampeter.

Emlyn led at the interval, the goal struck by Dion Phillips who switched from his normal midfield role to lead the attack – he was put

through and finished with aplomb.

That's how it remained until seven minutes from the end when Saints equalised through Minduga Simkevicius who rose at a corner and headed into the top corner of the net.

The winner was a quality affair as central midfielder Adam Williams went on a mazy run leaving would-be tacklers in his wake before slotting into an empty net.

The Lampeter Town versus Crannog game at North Road was postponed due to a bereavement in the Lampeter club and will now be played this week.

Ffostrasol turned on the style in midweek when springing a 5-1 win over reigning league champions Llandysul to reach the final of Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies. In the final Wanderers will take on the winners of this week's other semi-final tie between Cardigan Town and Newcastle Emlyn at Aberystwyth's Park Avenue on Monday, May 2.

As Ffostrasol produced the goods Cian Edwards netted twice and the other marksmen were Adam Jones, Iolo Thomas and Dafydd Morgan.

They could not repeat their cup exploits on Saturday when going down 4-3 against Dewi Stars in a league encounter at Llanddewi Brefi.

Despite banking maximum points Stars have completed their fixtures and are relegated.

Cilgerran were brushed aside 7-1 at Felinfach and as Rovers are set to be deducted three points for postponing a game last month are favourites to go down.
