FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Costcutter League Division One title contenders Newcastle Emlyn and Lampeter Town went through to the semi-final of the J Emrys Morgan Cup but both had to pull out all the stops to get past bottom of the pile Ffostrasol and Felinfach respectively.

Ffostrasol may be rock bottom but have fared far better in cup competitions and on current form with 14 league encounters outstanding it could prove imprudent to rule out their chance of survival.

Emlyn never seriously looked like being knocked out but lacked a cutting edge in the final quarter of the field where a number of chances went begging and it was not until the final quarter and in extra time that the Reds dominated.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes the visitors went ahead through striker Owain Patterson but a reshuffle by Emlyn manager Owain Thomas with central defender Sam Skinner moving to an attacking role was successful when the converted striker turned on a sixpence inside the penalty area and found the bottom corner of the net.

That's how it remained until extra time when substitute Niall Millband nudged the Reds ahead with a header and with four minutes left on the clock Jake Kelly crossed for Ashley Summers to net at the back post.

In emerging 2-1 winners over full-of-fight visitors Felinfach at North Road league leaders Lampeter Town were in the ascendancy during the opening quarter but the playing surface cutting up badly was a big leveller and the homesters were made to dig deep before securing their passage.

It was 1-1 at the interval, striker Jason Jones firing Town ahead and former Lampeter winger Joe Jenkins squaring matters.

Influential central midfielder Marc Evans headed home a cross from the right to regain the home advantage but a draw looked the likely outcome when the Milkmen were awarded a penalty in the dying moments.

Goalkeeper Dylan Evans who has excelled between the sticks for Town this term became the hero of the hour when diving to keep out the spot-kick from Lee Forrester.

Division One relegation threatened Cilgerran Rovers moved into the third round of Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies after a 3-2 win over Second Division visitors Aberporth at Parc-Y-Dre.

With Lampeter in cup action St Dogmaels closed the gap at the top to seven points with a 4-1 win over Dewi Stars at Llanddewi Brefi, a result that kept the north Ceredigion club in the relegation mire.

Playing up the slope in the first half Saints netted twice through leading marksman Louis Harding and although conceding a goal after the break goals by Peter Almond and Adam Williams made it plain sailing.

Llandysul still have an outside chance of retaining the title after a competent performance in spring a 4-1 win over Crannog at the Urdd Centre.

Central defender Dean Jones, playing as an unaccustomed striker, stole the limelight for the Swallows as he helped himself to a hat-trick.

For the visitors, who led by a solitary goal at the break, Jones netted his first two goals with headers and completed the magical hat-trick by leaving three would-be tacklers in his wake and netting with aplomb.

Teenage midfielder Scott Jones fired the other Llandysul goal as his side won in convincing fashion.

Aberaeron Reserves eased their relegation worries with an impressive performance in running out 3-1 winners over visitors Cardigan Town at Square Field.

The Black and Ambers led 2-0 at half time with goals from Jack Chetwynd and Dafydd Roberts and during the second period Lee Perkins hit a third goal to wrap up the points.
