FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Holders Newcastle Emlyn are through to the last eight of the Costcutter Easter Monday League Cup after a 4-0 win over full-of-fight Llanboidy of Division Two at Parc Emlyn.

The visitors who are challenging for promotion in the Second Division held their Division One opponents to a single goal at the interval and it was not until the final quarter that the Reds turned ample possession into further goals.

Fit again midfielder John Curran gave Emlyn the lead from the penalty spot and that's how it remained until Ollie Evans was put through for the second goal, Curran netted the third and his second with defender George Lowry completing the scoring.

Emlyn are in cup action again this Saturday when they face a long trek to the Wales-England border to take on Knighton Town Reserves, currently second in the Mid Wales League South, in round three of the J Emrys Morgan Cup.

St Dogmaels must still be wondering how they lost 1-0 against Cambrian Tyres League high-flying visitors Tregaron Turfs in the Emrys Morgan Cup.

Turfs had their best spell during a 20-minute period in the first half and took the lead from a counter-attack when a ball over the defence was chased by Liam Davies and he finished clinically.

From then on it was virtually all one-way traffic towards the visitors' goal where stand-in goalkeeper Sam Jones, normally a right back, performed heroics in repelling waves of Saints attacks.

Aberaeron Reserves improved their Division One survival hopes with a hard-earned 2-1 win over fourth-placed Crannog on their opponents' Urdd Centre stamping ground.

Goal heroes for the Black and Ambers were Gareth Severs and Jack Chetwynd – it was 1-1 after the opening 45 minutes.

Division Two promotion aspirants Aberporth kept the pressure on Bargod Rangers and Llanboidy with a 10-0 win over New Quay at Parcllyn.

Daniel Davies led the goal rush with four, Liam Griffiths and Reece Prowse bagged a brace apiece and the other marksmen were Josh Townsend and Michael King.
