FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

With joint leaders Newcastle Emlyn engaged in the Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies competition Lampeter Town took advantage in springing a hard-earned 1-0 away win over fast-improving Cardigan Town and moved three points clear at the summit in Division One of the Costcutter League.

The advantage could be stretched to six points this Saturday when lowly Cilgerran Rovers visit North Road and Emlyn take part in round one of the J Emrys Morgan Cup.

The young Magpies had already lowered the colours of champions Llandysul at King George V Playing Field and despite being without classy midfielders Liam James and John Lumb, turned in a fully-committed showing and it was perhaps understandable that home supporters felt their favourites deserved a share of the spoils.

There were chances at both ends during the opening 45 minutes but despite the ball striking the crossbar on a number of occasions in was goalless at the interval.

The all-important goal came seven minutes from the end when Szymon Konwiak moved up from the back and released front-runner Jason Jones for a left foot strike.

On the cup front Newcastle Emlyn dug deep to notch a 2-1 win over Bow Street Reserves in an entertaining Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies round one tie at Parc Emlyn.

Unbeaten after five outings in the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League, the visitors were a useful outfit who made the Reds pull out the stops.

Former Cardigan Town favourite Sam Hall put the Teifisiders ahead with a volley that went in off the post and although Street squared matters with a near-post header, Emlyn's Daniel Jones grabbed the glory with a solo effort six minutes from the end.

Division Two pacesetters Bargod Rangers reached round two after turning on the style in a 5-1 win over Dewi Stars of the First Division at Llanddewi Brefi.

Heavy rain throughout the 90 minutes made life difficult for both sides but they endeavoured to play attractive football with the Teifi Valley visitors worthy winners.

Although it was essentially a good all-round team performance that carried the day, special mention should be made of Lyndon Robinson who was a tower of strength at the heart of the defence and was given excellent support from George Hicks.

Rangers led 3-0 at half time thanks to strikes by Rhydian Davies who struck a 20-yard free kick and goals from Jaydyn Lynch and Steff Evans.

In the second period the visitors were indebted to talented goalkeeper Gethin Davies for two stops that were right out of the top drawer before goals by Lynch and Robbie Jenkins made it plain sailing for them.

Crannog were also in fine fettle as the coastal villagers made the journey to Aberystwyth pay dividends with a 6-1 win over unbeaten Cambrian Tyres second division leaders Penparcau.

For the visitors, who led 3-0 at the interval striker Mathew Smith led the way with a well-taken hat-trick and the other marksmen were Robbie Evans, George Colven and a Rhys Davies penalty.

Elsewhere Aberporth sprang a 3-2 win over visitors Llanilar after extra time and Felinfach also reached the next stage after a 4-2 away win over UWA Reserves.
