FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Newcastle Emlyn and Lampeter Town continue at the head of affairs in Division One of the Costcutter League after wins over Felinfach and Ffostrasol respectively as the rivals prepare to go head-to-head at Parc Emlyn this Saturday.

Lurking behind the front-runners are champions Llandysul who bounced back from a narrow defeat at Cardigan with a hard-earned 5-3 win over visitors St Dogmaels.

Emlyn were given a run for their money by Felinfach who battled for every ball but the visitors, who were again considerably understrength, eventually emerged worthy winners.

Craig Gordon put the Reds ahead when heading home at a corner and after the homesters buzzed in attack without any reward the visitors doubled their advantage when 16-year-old Corey Davies, on his first team debut, netted with some aplomb after a one-to-one with the goalkeeper.

Midway through the second half Dion Phillips wrapped up the points with a third goal to put the Reds in exactly the right frame of mind for the top-of-the-table clash.

Lampeter Town have not lifted the title since season 2008-09 and would dearly love to be crowned champions during the last season before the retirement of manager Terry Jones.

Still unbeaten, the mid-county men were made to pull out the stops by a full-of-fight Ffostrasol outfit at North Road with the visitors perhaps a shade unfortunate not to gain a share of the spoils.

Goals by Christy Gale, Robert Slawkowski and Jason Jones ensured that the homesters banked maximum points.

Although the 5-3 scoreline suggests a comfortable win for Llandysul over visitors St Dogmaels nothing could be further from the truth as the Teifi Estuary villagers matched the champions in every department and it was understandable that there were those who felt they deserved a draw.

The Swallows had a match-winner in winger Scott Thomas who netted a superb hat-trick as he gave his skills a thorough airing.

For the champs, who led 3-1 at the break, Ryan Evans, a new signing from Carmarthen Stars, and central defender Dean Jones were also on target while Adam Williams (2) and Billy Myers netted for Saints.

Crannog returned to the straight and narrow after a 5-2 defeat at Newcastle Emlyn by springing a 3-1 win over Dewi Stars at Llanddewi Brefi.

Dangerous raider George Colven bagged a brace of goals for the visitors and Robbie Evans was also on the scoresheet while Oscar Cayo-Evans replied for Stars.
